Book Talk Café

Book Talk Café welcomes regional authors

Nancy Soderberg has nearly twenty years of experience in the formation of U.S. foreign policy, she has been involved in most of the conflicts around the world and speaks and writes regularly on national security issues. Having worked on 4 presidential campaigns and the 1992 transition, she knows the dynamics and decisions of national politics as the 2008 race takes shape.  Distinguished Visiting Scholar, University of North Florida, Jacksonville; Adjunct Professor - School of Int. & Public Affairs, University of Columbia; Senior Policy Advisor - International Crisis Group; U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations ('97-'01); 3rd ranking official of National Security Council at the White House ('93-'97);  Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to Senator Edward M. Kennedy; Author of 2005 book, The Superpower Myth; her next book, The Prosperity Agenda:  What the World Wants from America – and What We Need in Return will be out in July 2008.

The Friends of the Ponte Vedra Library presents Ambassador Nancy Soderberg who will discuss her newly published book, THE PROSPERITY AGENDA: What the World Wants From America and What We Need in Return, on Wednesday, September 17 at 6:30 PM at the Ponte Vedra Library.

In the book, Soderberg and co-author Brian Katulis contend that the best way to make America and Americans more secure and prosperous is to put a higher priority on meeting the basic needs of our own citizens and people around the world.  This book lays out a blueprint for the next administration to revive America's position in the world and keep us safe, prosperous, and secure.  THE PROSPERITY AGENDA argues against recent approaches to foreign policy and explains that when more of the worlds’ citizens see the United States helping to improve their daily lives, then and only then, will the U.S. regain the world’s trust and persuade others to join us in meeting security threats and fighting terrorism.

THE PROSPERITY AGENDA points out for a fraction of the amount America spends in Iraq in a single day; we can make Americans more secure by exhibiting to the world that we’re a force for good. When the next administration does the smart thing by focusing on policies that broadly benefit people around the world, other countries notice, and they are more likely to be stronger allies and partners in the challenges faced by the United States.

Ambassador Soderberg publishes and speaks regularly on national security policy.  She is a commentator on national and international television and radio for shows including NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, BBC, Fox, National Public Radio, the Lehrer News Hour, CNN Crossfire, and The Daily Show.  She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is Chair of the Florida National Security Network.  She is Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Director of International Initiatives in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of North Florida.

From 1993-97, Ms. Soderberg served as the third ranking official of the National Security Council at the White House, as Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs.  She was responsible for day-to-day crisis management, briefing the President, developing U.S. national security policy at the highest levels of government, and handling issues regarding the press and Congress.

In 1997, President Clinton appointed Ms. Soderberg to serve as Alternate Representative to the United Nations as a Presidential Appointee with the rank of Ambassador.  Her responsibilities included representing the United States at the Security Council on a wide range of current national security issues, including conflict resolution, promotion of democracy abroad, trade policy, and arms control.  She represented the United States in negotiations at the Security Council, participated in missions to key conflict areas, and promoted U.S. national security policy at the United Nations and with the leadership of other nations

Following the talk, Ambassador Soderberg will sign copies of THE PROSPERITY AGENDA.  Books will be available for sale at the event.
